All the Young Dudes by Bruce Dickinson
I LOVED Iron Maiden in the 80’s. Metal wise, they were very good, but normal. What set them apart was Bruce Dickinson’s vocals. The dude could belt it out with true authority. That honestly is something most metal bands lack. Growling and snarling is just a way to fake the fact you can’t sing. Bruce never did that, he’s full balls to the wall wailing at maximum possible vocal output. That’s hard core. That’s metal. There was only one thing that ever topped wailing loudly with Bruce, and that was wailing even louder with Bon.
So, imagine my shock and pleasure when I heard in 1990 Bruce doing a Bowie cover, it was from his first solo album, Tattooed Millionaire. Now folks, that’s an awesome album regardless of how old it is or your preference in which metal is best. All The Young Dudes on that album is almost a toss-aside compared to the rest of the album. However, it’s still LOADS of fun, which is what this song should be. Here’s the video of Bruce doing the original:
I had completely forgotten this version existed until I saw a post today from Rockvu ofa recently recorded live version Bruce does. It’s good, but I like the original better.
The one chuckle I do like is by 1990, All The Young Dudes was showing it’s age. No longer does “my brother” dig the Beatles and the Stones, it’s “my father”! Come on Bruce, you’re nearly FIFTY! I dug the Beatles and Stones and I’m younger than you are.
Other than that, it’s a great version on an even greater album!
Here’s an idea of some of what Bruce has done over the years:
