Peace On Earth

Growing up in rural Kentucky in the late 70’s and early 80’s, listening to David Bowie wasn’t considered cool by almost anyone’s standards. Those friends that did think I was cool for challenging the social norms by listening to an androgynous asexual most of rural US wished was from Mars were usually the kind of people you really didn’t want thinking you were cool. Those that did listen to Bowie with me in those days did so with the doors closed and the headphones on. They did it often, but no one was allowed to know. If someone did suspect, it was vehemently denied. If the chatter got too much, the closed-door headphone sessions ended and we played southern rock to assure everyone we were not “that way”. Times were rough then.
I grew out of that phase ( basically everyone else adjusted ). Times passed by and I wanted a family. After several years of futility, I decided to consult with “experts”. I was told quite frankly I would most likely never have kids. I won’t bore you all with the extinuating circumstances. But, I pretty much gave up on the idea and went back to sinning and lusting and having all kinds of fun with rather reckless abandon.
So, I think it should be obvious why this rather crappy video I shot with a cell phone means so much to me:
Cruising the streets of my home town, listening to my all-time favorite performer who I used to be ostracized for listening to being broadcast for all to hear at Christmas, with the son I was told I’d never have.
Pretty damn cool.
For those that don’t remember, here’s a much better sounding version:

That’s such a nice story. Doctors do not know everything and everyday people confound their expectations. I’m pleased the same happened to you.On the Bowie note I love his and Bings rendition of Peace on Earth. It was done for Zowie (joe) I think plus it made Bowie look more mainstream and less the ’sexual pervert’..lol. I’ve always admired the way he brought up Zowie ‘alone’ and kept that side of his life extremely personal. And it’s obvious they are both exteremly close. Tho’ I do not have children I am a god father to one of my nephews and I feel like a father to him because he doesnt know his.
Best wishes for Christmas and New Year to yu and your family

December 5th, 2006 at 12:48 pmThanks for the wishes Londonboy. Happy Holidays to you and yours as well.
Bowie’d personal life has always been about as far removed from his public personna as you can get. I’ve always appreciated that and felt a lot of divas and stars could learn a lot from it. So many have cut their careers short by making circus headlines from their personal life while making no effort to contribute anything substantial ( Britney’s the latest to make that calculated mistake ). Although I think I know Bowie as well as anyone from a public perspective, I know for a fact I don’t have a clue what he’s like off stage. That’s the way I’d do it. As far as making something Zowie could enjoy and be proud of, he’s still doing now with his appeance on Spongebob and his latest movie.
And, that to me is what makes Bowie much more blogworthy than any other performer of my generation, there is absolutely no limit to the content he brings to the table. He challenged gender and sexual norms and now does kiddie shows and no one questions it. Even Bing thought at the time Bowie was very publicly recovering from heroin addiction that he was a “clean cut kid”. As long as he stays away from Barney or The Wiggles, I think his new pursuits will serve him as well now as they did the first go-round.
