The African - Keep a Child Alive

Much has been made about Bowie’s chameleon personality and how he seems to shed himself every so often. Well, he seems to be in that mode again. Not too long ago, he “retired” from music again. Then decided to pop up in a tv show or two. Now, he’s not even white again:

All silliness aside, Iman has been named a spokesperson for Keep A Child Alive, to sponsor help for children who are victims of AIDS in Africa. The musically retired white Bowie will do a song or two as the activist African Bowie. Sounds about right to me.

This isn’t the first time Bowie has decided he wasn’t white:

And, probably the best song off one of his worst albums, Lodger, was a forgotten tune called African Night Flight. There’s really nothing African about it other than the title, but it’s still a good song.

This time however, I think Bowie’s motivation is clear. Iman is enough to make any man be African, if just for one day.

Lodger is no way one of Bowie’s worst albums. I know you put two Bowie fans ion a room and they will disagree about alot of things. But I saw A Reality Tour five times and each time a highlight was Fantastic Voyage. What about Yassasin, Boys keep swinging, DJ, Look Back in Anger.

Moon go back and listen again. I am not saying it’s a Bowie classic but it’s a very good album imo.

BTW comments on Iman are spot on. I’d turn str8 for her!!

A lot of people feel Tonight or Never Let Me Down are Bowie’s worst, but I like them. About the only song on Lodger I liked was Look Back in Anger. I LOATHED DJ, and pretty much didn’t like anything else but Yassasin to a curious degree. However, Bowie often performs songs different than he records them. I have no doubt those soungs sounded great live ( Boys Keep Swinging was GREAT on SNL ), but as far a vinyl went, I didn’t like them. Given that Lodger was the final installment of the Bowie/Eno trilogy, I was probably expecting too much. I had grown to love Low and ‘Heroes’ and this was NOTHING like those two.

And as far as Iman goes, given the rumors at the time, that’s apparently what she did for Bowie! I mean, he went from a coked up bi-sexual thin white duke to a sober black str8 guy. She must be ALL THAT.

Squawk like a pink monkey bird!
