Subterraneans

Low’s always been one of my Top 5 Bowie favorites. IMO, Eno and Bowie mixed it up perfectly on this album. The following 2 albums not so much. Subterraneans is about as LOW as you can get on this planet. What would things sound like if you were that LOW? I love this song. It’s not something you whip out at any party ( unless you want it to end ), but, late at night, when things have quieted down and everyone else is asleep, you’ve taken a couple of pills to go to sleep, put this song on and see how different it sounds then. It makes sense to me then.

Bowie was struggling with a lot of demons when he hooked up with Eno. He left the source of those demons and “escaped” to Berlin. The title of the album supposedly reflected his new LOW profile. Subterraneans IMO was his idea of what tranquility would sound like. Close your eyes and just float around the bottom of the ocean. It doesn’t get much more tranquil than that.

I couldn’t agree with you more regaurding your interpretation of Subterrainians, and the Low album. I was 17 at the time of it’s released and waited in front of the record store to open the day it went on sale. I don’t think I’ve ever been struck dumb by anything recorded until that moment. I was then made aware of DB as an artist not just a clever pop star. I’ve been inspired to do my own work from this revelation. I feel I owe the man a great bit of graditude for this.

Excellent story George! I sort of got the impression Bowie was something different when I saw him originally on The Midnight Special. Young Americans was still a hot item but I was never a big fan of that album. Station To Station seemed different, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Low blew me away. At first I didn’t know whether to hate it or love it. Today, I love it.

Squawk like a pink monkey bird!
