Future Legend
For those of you familiar with Future Legend from Diamond Dogs, you’ll find this interesting. It’s an interpretation of the origins of the lyrics:
I was looking through Strange Fascination by Fathead Buckley and found some interesting things out about Future Legend. Bowie based the characters of Hunger City on a story by Lord Shaftesbury, who was a building inspector in London. In his inspection, Lord Shaftesbury found hundreds of “urchins” living on top of the buildings in the slums. This is also coupled with homage to William S. Burroughs, who influenced Bowie with his use of “cut-ups” and fascination with mixing science fiction with “low-life culture.” By vividly portraying Hunger City as a dystopic city populated with “de-humanized humanity” with “as series of impressionistic snapshots,” Bowie also paid homage to Burroughs with his style of writing in Future Legend. Interesting, no?

Elmer Fudd and the big pink bunny
It’s no secret Bowie often emulated other performers. Starting with his “Anthony Newley sound” in the 60’s, his “Plastic Soul” sound of the mid 70’s, his “Euro sound” of the late 70’s, and, the object of this post, his “romantic sound” of the early 80’s. Something always struck me as annoyingly familiar with his voice primarily in the Let’s Dance studio releases. I just couldn’t put my finger on where I had heard it before. I stumbled on some chatter on some chat boards, and a comment struck me at first as being so stupid it couldn’t be possible. But then again, this IS Bowie we’re talking about. So, I did some research. To my complete and total shock, I found this:
Apparently that’s not Bowie singing “put on your red shoes and dance the blues”.
Now, as crazy as it might seem, there’s more to this than meets the eye”
Rock legend David Bowie apparently has an unusual fan following him on his latest tour – an enormous pink rabbit.
The singer explained that he’d spotted the giant bunny at a series of his live shows during his latest tour. He apparently was so taken with the mystery follower, a person dressed head-to-toe in the outfit, that he even dedicated a tune to him during a concert.
Things got a little strange, however, when David was taking off from the Big Apple one day. “I thought, ‘Hey, it’s rock ‘n’ roll. It’s just a 5ft 3in bunny’,” says David. “Then we got on the plane out of New York and the bunny was on board. The guy was still in the costume.”
Seems like there’s a common bond that brought Elmer and David together. Made for a good song too.
