The Life Aquatic

I have just stumbled on the dangdest thing I think I might have ever heard in my life. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou soundtrack features 7 of 20 songs that are Bowie Ziggy era stuff. If that’s not good enough, most are Cajun! Now, anyone out there that’s not familiar with Cajun music, I’ll just say this much, NOTHING could be as far removed from Bowie’s style, especially Ziggy era stuff, than Cajun. Nothing! Seu Jorge’s interpretations of Five Years, Life On Mars?, Starman, Rock and Roll Suicide, and even Rebel Rebel are AWESOME! I personally will be looking for some other stuff from Seu Jorge just from what little I’ve heard from the clips from the soundtrack.
It’s been so long since I’ve heard a voice like this actually singing with some soul. How someone thought to combine that with the otherwise souless images of Ziggy Stardust is beyond me. But man, does it sound good!

February 9th, 2005 at 10:17 amYea…I wanted to say that I also love the Life Aquatic movie and Soundtrack but you failed to say that Seu Jorge sang in Portuguese. Portugese because he is from Brazil! No hard feelings, just wanted to put that out there…

Definitely an important omission on my part. If you don’t know the Bowie songs he sings by heart, you won’t have a clue what he’s singing ( if you’re like me and don’t know Portugese at all ).
Thanks for the heads up.

February 26th, 2005 at 5:16 pmBeing Brazillian, you’ll probably enjoy them even more than I did. I don’t know the first word of Portugese! I know the melodies and the music, and I recognize the songs because of that, but it would be even more enjoyabke to me to understand what he’s saying. Regardless, he does a heck of a good job with it.

March 22nd, 2005 at 9:04 pmI can’t find that he ever did Changes. That doesn’t mean he didn’t, it just means it may be hard to find. There are several db songs he did on the Life Aquatic soundtrack ( just click on the ’soundtrack’ link in the post ). If you do find it, let me know please.

May 27th, 2005 at 11:20 amSeu Jorge is credited for twelve David Bowie covers for the movie Life Aquatic. Five of them you can find on the sound track: “Five Years”, “Starman”, “Life On Mars?”, “Rebel, Rebel”, and “Rock N’ Roll Suicide”
Five additional tracks are on the bonus disc from the Special Edition DVD but I haven’t gotten to listen to them yet but they should be five of the seven that were in the movie: “Ziggy Stardust”, “Changes”, “Lady Stardust”, “Space Oddity”, “Queen Bitch”, “When I Live My Dreams”, or “Oh! You Pretty Thing”And if you haven’t heard any of these covers they are incredible, “Life On Mars?” is simply beautiful.

May 28th, 2005 at 12:23 amI am now the proud owner of the special DVD. Watching the movie is good. Not only does it pay a lot of attention to David Bowie, but it also tributes my little state, Kentucky. Putting them together in a movie still somewhat amazes me.
And yeah, as far as the soundtrack goes, Sue Jorge steals it. That has to be one of the most creative strokes I’ve possibly ever seen in music.
Thanks for the info.

June 17th, 2005 at 11:36 pmI just saw this (waited for video) movie and I too was blown away by the acoustic portugese versions of Bowie songs. From what I understand, he didn’t exactly translate the songs verbatim. However, the feel of them is wonderfully new and refreshing. First time I’ve gotten chills from a soundtrack in years. The original compositions by Mothersbaugh (sp) are also great. All of it together makes a magical combination.

June 20th, 2005 at 1:38 pmI got chills as well. Seu Jorge is on to something. Not necessarily just doing Bowie songs, but I think that style would serve him well if done in English. It’s been a LONG time since I’ve heard anything resembling real Blues.

February 9th, 2006 at 4:42 pmThough the sounds of rolling oceans and rooms of thick ship walls add to the songs further, Seu Jorge released a CD of all his Bowie covers recorded in-studio, crisp and clear. It includes…
1. Rebel Rebel
2. Life on Mars?
3. Starman
4. Ziggy Stardust
5. Lady Stardust
6. Changes
7. Oh! You Pretty Things
8. Rock N’ Roll Suicide
9. Suffragette City
10. Five Years
11. Queen Bitch
12. When I Live My Dream
13. Quicksand
14. Team ZissouThe last one is a playful original tune Jorge wrote for the film.
I hear the iTunes version of the whole record comes with “Space Oddity”. Not sure about that.
