In context of the time, Nomi and Arias were drag. The parenthesis are there for a reason. What was drag then isn't even close now. Television's standards have changed a LOT since 1979. Although not wearing feminine clothes and feminine makeup, those outfits most resemble dresses, and they are most definitely wearing makeup. So, although not my words or description, I agree with it.
